Jiang Wei attends COP28 steel standard principal release conference

2023/12/28 15:46

Invited by the World Trade Organization (WTO), Jiang Wei, Vice Chairman and Secretary General of the China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) attended the “Steel Standard Principles: Unlocking Decarbonization, Trade and Global Market” of the United Nations Climate Change Conference COP28 on Dec 5th , held in Dubai, UAE. The conference was jointly organized by the United Nations and the WTO.

During the conference, the latest version of the Steel Standard Principles was released. Jiang Wei expressed gratitude to the WTO for its work and achievements in promoting global fair trade and sustainable prosperity in the field of zero-carbon steel standards. He briefly introduced the EPD platform of China's steel industry and expressed willingness to contribute China's steel industry EPD platform and accumulated experience and data to colleagues around the world.

Jiang Wei also pointed out that the key to more efficiently achieving decarbonization worldwide lies in supporting and encouraging countries and areas with greater decarbonization potential, rather than encouraging resource concentration in areas with low absolute emissions due to their development stage. Some countries and regions are now setting up green trade barriers, which runs counter to this trend. As a developing country, China has high absolute emissions due to insufficient scrap steel resources, iron ore smelting, and energy structure reasons. However, it also shows great potential for and will be a major contributor to future decarbonization. More resources are needed to support China's steel industry in its low-carbon transformation. The WTO should promote the establishment of open, scientific, transparent, and inclusive zero-carbon steel standard principles on the basis of respecting the actual situation of each country. Based on this principle, it is necessary to promote mutual recognition and adoption of zero-carbon steel standards among countries. This will undoubtedly promote the global carbon neutrality ambitions. China's steel industry is following this principle and preparing zero-carbon steel standard based on the EPD platform. China is also willing to promote mutual recognition and adoption of EPD platforms and zero-carbon steel standards under the unified steel standard principles and framework of the WTO, promote global fair trade, and achieve sustainable prosperity for all countries.
